International Potato Day was celebrated globally on 30th May — a reminder of one of the world’s most consumed and versatile crops. But at Indicold, our view of the potato goes far beyond the farm — all the way into the freezer.

Behind every crispy fry, golden wedge, or ready-to-cook aloo tikki lies an invisible backbone that often goes unnoticed: the cold chain. Maintained at precise sub-zero temperatures, supported by automation and real-time monitoring, this cold chain is what truly ensures food safety, product integrity, and accessibility.

And it matters now more than ever.

📈 India’s Frozen Potato Story — Growing Fast

When you picture India’s agricultural landscape, it’s hard to overlook the potato. Our country is the world’s second-largest producer — harvesting over 60 million tonnes annually —and industry estimates suggest we could touch 100 million tonnes by 2050.

Yet, until recently, most of this bounty stayed in the fresh market. That’s changing rapidly. Driven by innovations like IQF (Individual Quick Freezing), strategic contract farming, and rising demand from QSRs and export channels, India’s frozen potato sector is hitting new milestones every year:

📊 The frozen potato market is already around USD 1.8 billion in 2024 and projected to grow to USD 4.3 billion by 2033 (~10% CAGR).
📊 Frozen French fries alone crossed USD 1.28 billion in 2023.
📊 Exports surged to 135,877 tonnes in 2023–24 — up from just 5,000 tonnes a decade ago.

And that’s just the beginning. Gujarat — the hub of India’s processing revolution — now accounts for about 80% of all processed potatoes in the country, feeding both domestic plates and global shelves.

🏭 Building the Backbone for Growth

Such progress doesn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of deliberate choices across the value chain — supporting growers, embracing automation and IQF across geographies, investing in future-ready cold chains, and staying laser-focused on sustainability.

At Indicold, we’re proud to support this momentum every day. Our fully automated, state-of-the-art hubs at Dholasanand Detroj — the first of their kind in India — have been built precisely for this purpose. These facilities feature:

✅ Precise temperature control at -18°C
✅ Energy-efficient automation with real-time visibility
✅ Scalable operations and zero-touch handling
✅ Low-GWP refrigerants and recyclable materials

More than automation, it’s about protecting every tonne of potato so that every shipment stays at its best — whether heading to a restaurant across India or a buyer halfway around the world.

And it’s this commitment to quality and reliability that keeps major frozen-food brands choosing us — year after year.

🌍 Feeding the Future, One Pallet at a Time

This year’s International Potato Day theme — “Shaping history, feeding the future” — couldn’t be more fitting. It reflects the global significance of this crop for food security, rural incomes, and sustainable growth.

Here in India, we’re witnessing the frozen potato revolution firsthand. With continued investments in cold chain capacity across new states, a broader range of frozen products — from wedges to hash browns — and deeper links between cold-storage networks and ports to grow exports, the future looks bright.

More than a supply-chain success story, this is about creating real value where it matters most — empowering farmers, supporting processors, and delivering excellence on every plate.

At Indicold, we’re honoured to be part of this progress. From farms to freezers to plates — we look forward to what lies ahead, together.

Potatoes or fries — at Indicold, we care for it all. 💙
